What is a Hammer pattern?

The Hammer is one of the most searched candlestick patterns among Indian retail traders. It signals that selling pressure is exhausting and buyers are beginning to assert control.

On NSE daily charts, Hammers near the 200-day EMA or round-number support levels (₹100, ₹500 etc.) have historically shown stronger reversal rates. Combine with RSI below 40 for confirmation.

What is the difference between a Hammer and a Hanging Man?
The shape is identical, but a Hammer appears after a downtrend (bullish signal) while a Hanging Man appears after an uptrend (bearish signal). Context is everything.
Is a green Hammer better than a red Hammer?
A green Hammer (close above open) is slightly stronger, but both are valid. Volume confirmation matters more than the candle colour.
How does MomentumIQ detect a Hammer?
We check that the lower shadow is at least 2× the body and the upper shadow is ≤ 20% of the candle range. The pattern is only flagged in a downtrend (price below 20-day EMA).
Should I trade a Hammer without confirmation?
Ideally wait for the next candle to close bullish (above the Hammer close) before entering. This reduces false signals significantly.
