About the Swing Failure Pattern Strategy
The Swing Failure Pattern captures moments when price tests a recent swing high or low but fails to break through, then reverses sharply in the opposite direction. This rejection of a key level often signals exhaustion among buyers or sellers, creating opportunity for a counter-trend move.
On the NSE, this pattern works well during the morning and early afternoon sessions when volume is concentrated and price discovery is active. The strategy is particularly relevant for liquid large-cap and mid-cap stocks where volume spikes around support and resistance levels are reliable. NSE's volatility patterns during market open and around news releases create frequent swing failure setups.
The basic setup involves identifying a prior swing high or low, then watching for price to approach or briefly touch that level on lower volume than the initial swing. When price rejects and closes away from the level with a volume increase, it signals potential weakness in the breakout attempt. Traders enter on the reversal candle or confirmation bar, with stops typically placed just beyond the failed swing level.
This approach suits daily and weekly timeframes where trends are clearer and whipsaws less frequent than intraday charts.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Swing Traders comfortable with a Daily / Weekly timeframe and holding periods around 3–10 days. It's built for the Equity, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Price spikes above a major swing high then immediately fails
Failure candle shows long upper wick — rejection
Volume on the spike is lower than the prior swing high
RSI was overbought when failure occurred
Broader market also showing weakness at the same time
How This Strategy Works
1
Identify the higher timeframe trend on the weekly chart — only trade in the direction of the dominant trend
2
Wait for a pullback to a key support level, EMA, or chart pattern completion on the daily chart
3
Enter on a confirmation candle — set stop below the swing low, target the next resistance level for minimum 1:2 RR
Entry & Exit Rules
✓ Entry Conditions
Price spikes above a major swing high then immediately fails
Failure candle shows long upper wick — rejection
Volume on the spike is lower than the prior swing high
RSI was overbought when failure occurred
Broader market also showing weakness at the same time
✕ Avoid When
Strong fundamental catalyst supports the new high
Low-volume stock — spike may be operator-driven
During earnings — price discovery overrides pattern
SFP on a very short-term timeframe only — needs daily
Market breadth positive — stock alone failing is weaker signal

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ With multi-day holds, the main risk is overnight/weekend gap risk on NSE — position sizing should account for gap moves, not just the intraday stop distance.
