About the CPR Breakout Strategy
The CPR Breakout strategy targets the opening range breakout pattern, capturing momentum when price moves decisively beyond the Camarilla Pivot Range established from the previous trading session. This strategy capitalizes on the tendency of Indian equities and futures to gap or trend strongly at market open when institutional orders accumulate and overnight news impacts sentiment.

On NSE, this approach is particularly relevant due to high liquidity during the first hour after 9:15 AM opening and distinct volatility clustering in the initial trading window. The strategy works well across both equity intraday and futures segments where volume concentration is highest early in the session, making breakout moves more reliable and easier to exit.

The setup identifies three price levels from the CPR calculation: the pivot, resistance, and support bands. Traders enter when price breaks above the upper band or below the lower band with confirmatory volume, signaling institutional participation rather than random noise. The daily timeframe allows traders to prepare levels before market open and execute trades with clear risk parameters tied to the established range. Exit rules typically reference the innermost pivot band or trailing stop mechanisms as price momentum develops.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Equity Intraday, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Breakout strategies are prone to false breakouts and whipsaws, especially around low-volume sessions or just before major news/results. Confirm volume alongside the price breakout rather than trading the level alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
CPR (Central Pivot Range) Breakout trades the decisive break of price beyond the CPR band — above the Top Central (TC) for bullish breakouts or below the Bottom Central (BC) for bearish breakouts. A wide CPR breakout with volume signals strong directional conviction for the trading session.
Narrow CPR (less than 0.3% of price) historically favors breakout/trending days. Wide CPR (above 0.5%) favors range-bound reversal trading. Check the CPR width each morning before market open to decide whether to favor breakout or reversal strategies for that session.
Require a close beyond the TC or BC level (not just an intraday touch), with volume exceeding the prior 20-day average. The breakout should ideally occur within the first 1-2 hours of trading for maximum follow-through potential during the remainder of the session.
Target the next pivot resistance level (R1, R2) for bullish breakouts or support level (S1, S2) for bearish breakouts. The previous day's high/low also serves as a common intermediate target before extending toward further pivot-based levels.
