About the Cup and Handle Strategy
The Cup and Handle is a continuation pattern that captures the market's behavior after a temporary pullback. The strategy waits for a stock to form a rounded bottom, resembling a cup, followed by a brief consolidation that slopes slightly downward, creating the handle. When price breaks above the handle's resistance, the strategy enters a long position, betting that the prior uptrend will resume with fresh momentum.

This pattern works well on NSE equities because Indian stocks often exhibit the consolidation behavior required for clean cup formations. The segment's improving liquidity, particularly in mid-caps and large-caps, allows traders to execute entries and exits without significant slippage. The daily timeframe aligns naturally with NSE's trading hours, giving the pattern time to develop while remaining relevant to retail and institutional traders alike.

The setup requires identifying three key elements: a prior uptrend establishing the bias, a cup with rounded lows rather than V-shaped bottoms, and a handle that contains volume below average breakout levels. Entry triggers when price closes above the handle resistance with volume confirmation. The strategy filters out false breakouts by requiring the pullback to hold above previous support, ensuring the uptrend's integrity remains intact.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Breakout strategies are prone to false breakouts and whipsaws, especially around low-volume sessions or just before major news/results. Confirm volume alongside the price breakout rather than trading the level alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Cup and Handle is a bullish continuation pattern resembling a U-shaped cup followed by a smaller downward-drifting handle. The cup represents a rounded consolidation after a prior uptrend, and the handle is a brief pullback before the breakout. It is one of the most reliable patterns for identifying stocks poised for continued upward movement.
The cup should be U-shaped (not V-shaped) and take 7-65 weeks to form on weekly charts, or 4-12 weeks on daily charts for swing trading. The handle should retrace no more than 33% of the cup's advance and form in the upper half of the cup, taking 1-4 weeks with declining volume.
Measure the depth of the cup (from the high before the cup formed to the cup's lowest point). Add this depth to the breakout point (the handle's resistance level). Example: cup high ₹500, cup low ₹400 (depth ₹100), handle breakout at ₹490, target = ₹490 + ₹100 = ₹590.
Volume should decline during the cup formation, decline further during the handle (showing reduced selling interest), then surge on the breakout above the handle's resistance — ideally 1.5-2x the average volume of the prior 20 sessions. Low volume on the breakout day is a warning sign of a weak or false breakout.
