About the VWAP Crossover Strategy
# VWAP Crossover

VWAP Crossover is an intraday strategy that captures momentum shifts when price crosses the Volume Weighted Average Price level. The strategy operates on the principle that VWAP acts as a dynamic support or resistance zone; when price moves above VWAP with conviction, it often signals buying interest, and breaks below typically indicate selling pressure.

On NSE equity intraday and futures segments, this strategy benefits from the market's distinct liquidity patterns across trading sessions. Morning volatility spikes around market open and the pre-close period generate sharp VWAP crossovers with sufficient volume confirmation, making signal quality more reliable than in lower-volume periods. NSE's consistent market hours and institutional participation create repeatable price structures around VWAP levels.

The setup identifies when price closes decisively above or below VWAP on the daily timeframe, then uses intraday momentum to confirm the directional bias. Traders look for clean penetrations accompanied by volume expansion, avoiding whipsaws during consolidation phases. Position entries typically follow confirmation candles after the crossover, with exits defined by subsequent VWAP reversals or predefined risk levels. The strategy works well during trending markets but requires caution during choppy, range-bound conditions common in afternoon sessions.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Intermediate strategy suits Swing & Positional Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Equity Intraday, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ VWAP-based entries can look very different on low-liquidity stocks versus index majors — applying this strategy on illiquid names tends to produce misleading backtest results that don't hold up in live slippage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
A VWAP crossover occurs when price crosses above VWAP (bullish) or below VWAP (bearish), shifting the intraday supply-demand balance. While not highly reliable as a standalone signal (price crosses VWAP multiple times daily), crossovers occurring with volume expansion and at significant technical confluences carry meaningful intraday directional weight.
Require the crossover to occur with at least 1.5x average volume on the crossing candle, the VWAP to be clearly directional (sloping upward for bullish crossovers), and price to close convincingly beyond VWAP (not just touching it). Morning session crossovers (first 60 minutes) are often more significant than midday crossovers.
The "first VWAP reclaim" — the first time price crosses back above VWAP after being below it in the morning session — is often the strongest bullish intraday signal of the session. It suggests that initial morning sellers have been absorbed and institutional buying is sufficiently strong to push price back above the volume-weighted benchmark.
Opening above VWAP: bullish session bias, favor long setups at support levels with VWAP itself as first target. Opening below VWAP: bearish session bias, favor short setups at resistance with VWAP as first downside obstacle. The opening VWAP relationship is one of the most reliable intraday bias-setters for experienced NSE day traders.
