About the 5 EMA Scalping Strategy
# 5 EMA Scalping
5 EMA Scalping is a momentum-based intraday strategy that captures short-term directional moves using exponential moving averages on ultra-short timeframes. The strategy identifies when price breaks away from a 5-period EMA, signaling a shift in short-term momentum, and exits quickly as the move matures or reverses.
On the NSE, this approach works particularly well during high-liquidity sessions—the market open and the final hour of trading—when equity and futures contracts exhibit sharp, directional moves with tight spreads. The strategy exploits the predictable volatility patterns that emerge around key support and resistance levels during these windows.
A typical setup requires price to either break above or below the 5 EMA with confirmatory volume or a secondary indicator filter. Traders hold positions for minutes or a few bars, targeting moves of 10-50 pips depending on the instrument and volatility regime. Risk is managed through tight stop losses placed just beyond the recent swing.
The strategy suits traders who can monitor charts actively and execute quickly. It requires discipline around entry timing and position sizing, as scalping on the 1-min or 5-min chart generates frequent signals that can lead to overtrading if rules aren't strictly followed.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Intermediate strategy suits Full-time Scalpers comfortable with a 1-Min / 5-Min timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Equity Intraday, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed.

Performance vs Nifty 50
Nifty 50 comparison isn't available for this backtest period yet.
Price bouncing consistently off 5 EMA on 5 or 15-minute chart
5 EMA steeply sloped — strong trend
20 EMA confirming same direction as 5 EMA
First 2 hours of session — trend strongest
Nifty or BankNifty future showing clear trend
How This Strategy Works
1
Identify the intraday trend direction using VWAP or EMA on the 1-minute or 5-minute chart
2
Wait for a pullback to the key level — enter on the first rejection candle showing momentum resumption
3
Exit at the next micro-resistance or after a fixed target of 0.2–0.5% — stop loss is tight, just below the entry candle low
Entry & Exit Rules
✓ Entry Conditions
Price bouncing consistently off 5 EMA on 5 or 15-minute chart
5 EMA steeply sloped — strong trend
20 EMA confirming same direction as 5 EMA
First 2 hours of session — trend strongest
Nifty or BankNifty future showing clear trend
✕ Avoid When
5 EMA is flat — no scalping opportunity
Multiple crossovers — sideways session
After 1:30 PM — 5 EMA scalping loses edge
High VIX — 5 EMA stops get hit frequently
Large-gap open — 5 EMA unreliable in first 30 minutes

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 5 EMA is the fastest commonly used moving average and closely tracks price action on short timeframes. On 5-minute NSE charts, it acts as a dynamic support in uptrends and resistance in downtrends. Scalpers use it as both an entry trigger and a trailing stop.
Wait for price to pull back to the 5 EMA after a strong directional move. Look for a rejection candle — a pin bar or hammer — touching the EMA. Enter on the close of that candle with a stop just below the EMA. Target a 1:1.5 or 1:2 risk-reward exit.
The 3-minute and 5-minute charts work best. The 1-minute chart generates too much noise. Always check the 15-minute trend direction first — only take 5 EMA scalp entries in the direction of the 15-minute trend to maintain a statistical edge.
Stop after 3 consecutive losses in a session. This indicates either the strategy is not working in current market conditions or you are making execution errors. Take a break, review the trades, and only re-enter if conditions clearly reset.
