About the Reverse Scalping Strategy
Reverse Scalping is a momentum strategy that captures sharp reversals and pullbacks in highly liquid stocks on the NSE. Rather than following a trend, it identifies moments when price momentum falters—where aggressive buying or selling pressure suddenly exhausts itself—and positions for the counter-move that typically follows.
The strategy thrives on NSE's intraday volatility, particularly during the first 30 minutes and final hour of the trading session when institutional activity creates pronounced swings. NSE equity and futures segments offer sufficient tick liquidity in major indices and large-cap stocks to enter and exit positions quickly on one and five-minute timeframes.
A typical setup requires clear price action: an extended move in one direction followed by weakening volume at the extreme, signaling that momentum is drying up. Traders then watch for the reversal candle—a rejection pattern that forms when price fails to make a new high or low. Volume confirmation is critical; the reversal should occur on relatively high volume to confirm genuine buying or selling interest in the opposite direction.
The core appeal is that reversals offer defined risk at the extreme while targeting the subsequent pullback or swing, making it suitable for traders comfortable reading momentum exhaustion on lower timeframes.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Intermediate strategy suits Full-time Scalpers comfortable with a 1-Min / 5-Min timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Equity Intraday, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed.

Identify the intraday trend direction using VWAP or EMA on the 1-minute or 5-minute chart
2
Wait for a pullback to the key level — enter on the first rejection candle showing momentum resumption
3
Exit at the next micro-resistance or after a fixed target of 0.2–0.5% — stop loss is tight, just below the entry candle low
Entry & Exit Rules
✓ Entry Conditions
Price overextended 2.5+ ATR from mean intraday
RSI above 80 or below 20 on 15-minute chart
Volume exhaustion candle at extreme — long wick
Intraday trend has been running for 2+ hours
VWAP far away — gravitational pull for reversion
✕ Avoid When
Fundamental news driving the overextension
Stock in a sustained sector theme — overextension continues
Trying to reverse an index move — dangerous
Last hour of trading — close of day positions extend moves
Small-cap stock — reversals unpredictable

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Reverse Scalping (also called counter-trend scalping) enters short-term positions against the prevailing intraday trend at momentum exhaustion points, targeting quick reversals toward the mean. Unlike standard scalping which follows momentum, reverse scalping bets on brief countertrend moves at intraday extremes before the primary trend resumes.
Look for: price at an intraday extreme (session high/low or 2+ ATR from VWAP), RSI above 75 or below 25 on the 5-minute chart, declining volume on the most recent extension candles, and a candlestick reversal pattern (shooting star, hammer) as the immediate entry trigger for the quick counter-trend fade.
Reverse scalping carries inherently higher risk since you are fighting momentum, requiring smaller position sizes (50-75% of normal scalping size) and tighter stops (stop beyond the session extreme that triggered the reversal signal). Take profits quickly (50% of target immediately) as the primary trend can resume rapidly, leaving reverse scalpers trapped.
Maximum holding period should be 5-10 minutes for intraday reverse scalping. If the expected countertrend move has not materialized within this window, exit regardless — remaining in a counter-trend position for extended periods dramatically increases the probability of being overwhelmed by the primary trend resuming strongly.
