About the Balance of Power Strategy
Balance of Power is a momentum strategy that capitalizes on shifts in intraday strength between buyers and sellers. It identifies moments when one side gains decisive control over price movement, typically signaling the start of a sustained directional move. The strategy works by observing how price responds to volume—specifically, when rising prices pair with increasing volume relative to prior bars, it suggests institutional accumulation rather than casual trading.
On the NSE, this approach is particularly relevant given the market's pronounced intraday volatility and deep liquidity in large-cap stocks. The 9:15 to 15:30 IST window creates predictable volume surges that correspond with domestic trading hours, while foreign flows during overlap sessions add directional conviction when balance shifts occur. NSE equities also exhibit clean, trending moves once momentum initiates, rewarding early entries.
The strategy looks for setups where price makes a new higher high or lower low while volume expansion confirms the breakout. It then trails the position using subsequent volume profiles and price structure until momentum exhaustion appears. This suits daily timeframes where noise is filtered but reaction speed remains viable.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Balance of Power (BOP) measures the ability of buyers versus sellers to push price to extreme high or low levels. It is calculated as (Close - Open) / (High - Low), oscillating between -1 and +1. A reading near +1 means buyers controlled the entire session. A reading near -1 means sellers were dominant.
Look for BOP divergence with price — when price makes a new high but BOP makes a lower high, distribution is occurring. When price makes a new low but BOP makes a higher low, accumulation is happening. These divergences on NSE daily charts often precede reversals by 5-10 sessions.
Consistently positive BOP readings (above 0.3) for 5+ consecutive sessions confirm strong buying pressure in an uptrend. Use a 13-period EMA of BOP as a signal line — when BOP crosses above its EMA, it is a bullish signal. When BOP is declining even though price is rising, begin tightening stops.
BOP is unique because it measures intraday price control (open to close relative to the range) rather than just closing prices like RSI. This makes it more sensitive to institutional activity which tends to dominate the last hour of NSE trading. BOP complements RSI well — use both together for stronger confirmation.
