About the Bank Nifty Expiry Scalping Strategy
Bank Nifty Expiry Scalping targets intraday volatility on expiry day, capitalizing on sharp directional moves and mean reversion in the final hours of the contract cycle. The strategy exploits the accelerated price action that typically occurs as options approach expiration, when gamma effects intensify and market participants unwind positions.

This approach is well-suited to NSE's Bank Nifty options segment because the contract maintains exceptional liquidity even on expiry day, with tight bid-ask spreads that allow for quick entries and exits. Bank Nifty's inherent volatility patterns—particularly pronounced swings in the last two hours of trading—create predictable scalping opportunities. The NSE's extended trading hours and the concentration of institutional activity around key support and resistance levels provide consistent setups throughout the day.

The strategy focuses on price action signals derived from 1-minute and 5-minute timeframes, watching for breakouts from consolidation zones, support and resistance bounces, and volume confirmation. Traders identify areas where recent price rejection occurs or where multiple touches suggest institutional interest, then enter small-sized positions that align with the immediate directional bias. The tight stops and quick profit targets reflect the short-term nature of these scalps, with exits typically taken within minutes.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Intermediate strategy suits Full-time Scalpers comfortable with a 1-Min / 5-Min timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Options segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed.

⚠️ As with any systematic strategy, the most common mistake is deviating from the defined entry/exit rules mid-trade based on emotion rather than the backtested logic.

Frequently Asked Questions
BankNifty has weekly Wednesday expiry — making it the most actively traded instrument on NSE. On expiry day, options premium collapses to near-zero if price stays away from the strike. This creates two opportunities: (1) Short gamma trades if BankNifty stays in a range, (2) Long gamma trades if a breakout occurs beyond the day's expected move.
Expected Move = ATM Straddle Premium. If BankNifty ATM straddle is trading at ₹300, the market expects a ±₹300 move on expiry day. If BankNifty moves more than ₹300 in either direction, option buyers profit. If it stays within ₹300, option sellers profit. Check this level every expiry morning before deciding your strategy direction.
The two windows: (1) 10:30 AM–12:30 PM — after initial volatility settles, patterns become clearer. (2) 2:00 PM–3:00 PM — last hour acceleration as positions are closed. Avoid first 30 minutes — too chaotic. Midday (12:30–2 PM) is often slow as positions are in stalemate. Always have your levels set before market open.
