About the Covered Call Strategy
A covered call involves holding shares while simultaneously selling call options against that position. The strategy captures income from option premium decay while maintaining upside exposure up to the strike price of the sold call. It works particularly well on NSE given the exchange's liquid options market across major stocks and indices, where tight bid-ask spreads make option entry and exit viable without slippage concerns.

The strategy suits NSE's volatility patterns, which tend to spike during specific windows like market open and around economic data releases. These volatility spikes inflate option premiums, creating better selling opportunities. Traders typically look for setups where they already own stock they're comfortable holding, then identify call strikes slightly above current price where premiums offer meaningful income relative to the position size. The daily timeframe allows traders to capture premium decay while remaining responsive to overnight gaps or earnings announcements that might impact both the underlying and options.

This approach appeals to traders seeking steady income in range-bound or mildly bullish markets while offsetting some downside risk through premium collected. It requires monitoring the options chain for strike selection and understanding assignment risk as expiration approaches.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Covered Call involves holding the underlying stock and selling a call option against it. You collect premium income while capping your upside at the strike price. It is ideal for generating additional income on stocks you already own and have a neutral to mildly bullish outlook on for the near term.
Sell calls 5-10% above the current market price (delta around 0.20-0.30) for monthly expiry. For a stock at ₹1,000, sell the ₹1,070-1,100 strike call. This balances meaningful premium income with reasonable room for the stock to appreciate before potentially being called away.
If the stock closes above your strike at expiry, your shares are sold (called away) at the strike price. You keep the premium collected plus the gain up to the strike price. Many traders use this as an opportunity to re-enter via a new Cash Secured Put, or simply accept the profit and move to a new position.
Most traders write monthly covered calls, rolling the position each expiry. If the stock stays below the strike, the call expires worthless and you keep the full premium, then write a new call for the next month. This systematic approach can add 1-3% monthly income on stable, range-bound holdings.
