About the Darvas Box Strategy Strategy
The Darvas Box Strategy captures breakouts from consolidation patterns by identifying price ranges that stocks trade within before explosive moves. The strategy tracks the highest high and lowest low over a defined period, forming a "box." A buy signal triggers when price breaks above the box's upper level on sufficient volume, indicating fresh momentum.

This approach works well on NSE equities because Indian markets exhibit pronounced intraday volatility and strong volume spikes during breakout moves, particularly in mid-cap and large-cap stocks. NSE's extended trading hours and consistent liquidity allow traders to enter positions cleanly during breakout confirmation. The strategy capitalizes on NSE's tendency for stocks to consolidate within predictable ranges before directional moves, common in both trending and range-bound market conditions.

The setup is straightforward: identify a stock trading within a defined high-low range over recent sessions, then wait for a close above the resistance level accompanied by volume expansion. The logic assumes that breakouts from consolidation precede meaningful price moves. Stop-losses typically sit below the box's lower boundary. This simplicity makes it accessible to newer traders while remaining relevant across different market conditions on NSE.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Developed by Nicolas Darvas, this method identifies a stock's trading range (the "box") defined by recent highs and lows during consolidation. When price breaks above the box top with volume, it signals a buy. The strategy then trails stops by establishing new boxes as the stock advances, locking in profits while letting winners run.
A box forms when a stock makes a new high, then trades sideways for at least 3 sessions without exceeding that high or breaking a defined low. The box top is the high, box bottom is the lowest low during the consolidation. A valid box requires the stock to test both boundaries at least once during formation.
Enter on a close above the box top with volume at least 1.5x average. Initial stop loss goes at the box bottom. As the stock advances and forms a new box at a higher level, move your stop up to the new box bottom — this trailing mechanism is the core risk management method of the Darvas system.
Growth stocks in strong uptrends with clear institutional accumulation work best — particularly mid-cap stocks breaking out to new highs with strong earnings momentum. Avoid using Darvas boxes on range-bound or declining stocks since the method is specifically designed for trending breakout situations, not reversal trading.
