About the Momentum Scalping Strategy
Momentum Scalping targets short-lived directional moves within the first few minutes of candle formation, capitalizing on initial price thrust before reversal or consolidation. The strategy captures intraday volatility spikes driven by order imbalances and retail participation patterns typical of NSE equity and futures markets.
NSE's high liquidity in large-cap stocks and index futures makes momentum scalping viable, particularly during the opening hour when volatility clusters and volume surges. The strategy exploits the predictable behavior of quick money and algorithmic entries that often precede profit-taking, a pattern consistent across NSE's trading hours.
Setup identification relies on price action confirmation—a break of a recent swing high or support level paired with expanding volume on one or five-minute candles. Traders watch for momentum exhaustion signals such as waning volume, upper wick rejection, or loss of continuation, signaling exit points. Position sizing is tight, and holding periods are typically under five minutes, sometimes extending to ten minutes for stronger setups.
The strategy suits intermediate traders comfortable managing rapid entries and exits, reading order flow nuances, and responding to intraday volatility without emotional drift during high-frequency market movement.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Intermediate strategy suits Full-time Scalpers comfortable with a 1-Min / 5-Min timeframe and holding periods around Intraday. It's built for the Equity Intraday, Futures segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed.

High delivery percentage — sustained buying
Clear trend — no reversal signal on any timeframe
How This Strategy Works
1
Identify the intraday trend direction using VWAP or EMA on the 1-minute or 5-minute chart
2
Wait for a pullback to the key level — enter on the first rejection candle showing momentum resumption
3
Exit at the next micro-resistance or after a fixed target of 0.2–0.5% — stop loss is tight, just below the entry candle low

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Momentum Scalping enters trades in the direction of strong immediate price momentum, riding brief but powerful intraday directional bursts rather than betting on reversals to the mean. It works best during high-momentum trending sessions with sustained directional volume, the opposite conditions from mean reversion scalping.
Look for price breaking an intraday reference level (5-minute opening range high/low, VWAP) with at least 2x the average 5-minute volume on the breakout candle, combined with RSI above 60 (for longs) confirming sustained buying pressure rather than a brief spike that immediately fades.
Exit when the 5-minute candle range contracts significantly below the recent average (momentum deceleration), volume drops below the session average, or the first candle closes outside the momentum direction (potential reversal signal). Scaling out partially at 1:1 risk-reward while trailing the remainder captures momentum moves efficiently.
The first 60 minutes (9:15-10:15 AM) and last 45 minutes (2:45-3:30 PM) consistently show the strongest, most sustained intraday momentum on NSE, driven by institutional order execution at session open and close. The midday period typically shows weakest momentum and should be avoided for momentum scalping approaches.
