About the Put Call Ratio Strategy Strategy
The Put Call Ratio Strategy analyzes the volume of put options relative to call options traded on NSE equity segments to gauge market sentiment and potential reversals. This ratio acts as a contrarian indicator, revealing whether participants are positioning defensively or aggressively at specific price levels.

The strategy captures shifts in implied fear and greed by monitoring how option flow changes throughout the trading session. When the ratio reaches extreme levels, it often signals exhaustion in the prevailing trend. On NSE, this approach is particularly relevant given the consistent liquidity in major index options and large-cap stocks, which ensures reliable option chain data during market hours. NSE's extended trading window and high retail participation also generate distinct sentiment patterns that the ratio can effectively track.

Traders typically establish setups when the Put Call Ratio deviates significantly from its average range, suggesting either excessive put buying near support or call accumulation near resistance. The strategy works best on daily timeframes where sentiment extremes become more pronounced and actionable. Because NSE equity options experience predictable volatility patterns tied to domestic economic data releases and market open dynamics, traders can identify recurring ratio thresholds that precede directional moves.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) measures the volume or open interest of put options relative to call options. A high PCR (above 1.3) indicates excessive bearish sentiment (often a contrarian bullish signal), while a low PCR (below 0.7) indicates excessive bullish sentiment (often a contrarian bearish signal) due to crowd psychology extremes.
NSE's official website publishes live option chain data including PCR for Nifty, Bank Nifty, and individual F&O stocks. Most trading platforms (Zerodha Kite, Upstox, Sensibull) also display real-time PCR calculations directly within their options chain interface, updated throughout the trading session.
Open Interest PCR is generally considered more reliable for identifying sustained positioning since it reflects actual outstanding contracts rather than just the day's trading activity, which can be skewed by short-term speculation. Volume PCR is more useful for identifying immediate intraday sentiment shifts during the trading session.
Nifty PCR readings above 1.7-1.8 have historically coincided with extreme fear and often preceded short-term bottoms, while readings below 0.5-0.6 have coincided with extreme greed often preceding short-term tops. These extremes should be combined with price action confirmation rather than traded as standalone contrarian signals.
