About the Relative Strength Index Strategy Strategy
The Relative Strength Index Strategy captures momentum shifts by identifying overbought and oversold conditions in price action. The RSI oscillator measures the magnitude of recent price changes to evaluate momentum strength, helping traders recognize potential reversals or continuation moves within established trends.

On the NSE, this strategy works well because of the market's distinct intraday volatility patterns and the liquidity available in major indices and large-cap stocks. Indian equities often exhibit sharp reversals during specific sessions, particularly around market open and close, creating reliable RSI extremes that precede directional moves.

The strategy looks for setups where RSI diverges from price action or reaches extreme levels above 70 (overbought) or below 30 (oversold) on the daily timeframe. Traders typically wait for price action confirmation, such as a reversal candle or volume surge, before entering. Volume serves as a filter to ensure the reversal has conviction behind it rather than a shallow bounce. The daily timeframe allows traders to capture multi-session moves while avoiding the noise present in shorter intervals. This approach suits beginners because it relies on straightforward indicator readings combined with basic price and volume observation.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
RSI measures the magnitude of recent price gains versus losses on a 0-100 scale, identifying overbought (above 70) and oversold (below 30) conditions. On NSE, RSI is widely used both as a standalone reversal signal at extremes and combined with trend analysis for entry timing within established trends.
RSI works best as a trend confirmation and entry timing tool rather than a pure reversal signal. In strong uptrends, RSI can remain above 70 for extended periods without reversing — using 70 as an automatic sell signal in trending markets generates frequent premature exits and missed continued gains.
In an established uptrend, look for RSI to pull back to the 40-50 range (rather than the traditional 30 oversold level) as a buying opportunity, since strong trends rarely allow RSI to reach deeply oversold territory. This trend-context approach to RSI significantly improves entry timing compared to fixed overbought/oversold rules.
RSI divergence (price making new highs/lows while RSI fails to confirm) adds significant reliability when combined with price action confirmation. A bearish divergence at a key resistance level with a subsequent price breakdown offers much higher conviction than relying on the divergence or resistance level alone.
