About the Snapback Strategy Strategy
The Snapback Strategy captures price recoveries following sharp intraday declines. It relies on the observation that panic selling often overshoots fair value, creating reversal opportunities as buyers step in to recapture lost ground within the same trading session.
On the NSE, this strategy benefits from the market's liquid large-cap universe and characteristic volatility patterns during the first and last hours of trading. The strategy is particularly relevant given NSE's retail participation, which often triggers momentum-driven selloffs that reverse when institutional or algorithmic buyers recognize the oversold condition.
The setup identifies a stock that has declined significantly from its opening or intraday high, typically accompanied by elevated volume on the down move. Traders watch for stabilization signals and then enter on the snapback, exiting as the stock approaches its previous resistance or shows weakness. Price action serves as the primary confirmation tool, with volume validating both the initial selling pressure and the reversal momentum. The strategy works best in stocks with sufficient liquidity to enable quick position exits and in market conditions where intraday volatility is present without trending strongly in one direction.
Who This Strategy Is For
This Beginner strategy suits Beginner Traders comfortable with a Daily timeframe and holding periods around several days. It's built for the Equity segment on NSE, so it fits traders who can check positions without needing intraday execution speed. Because it uses a small, well-known set of indicators, it's a reasonable starting point if you're new to systematic NSE trading.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
⚠️ Momentum strategies can give back gains quickly once momentum fades. A common error is not tightening stops as profits build, which lets a winning trade round-trip back to breakeven or a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Snapback Strategy enters when price has extended far from its mean (VWAP, moving average) and shows initial signs of reverting back, "snapping back" like a rubber band toward equilibrium. It works best in range-bound NSE sessions with no strong fundamental catalyst sustaining the extension, when the move reflects technical overextension rather than genuine value reassessment.
Price deviating 0.4-0.7% from session VWAP on Nifty futures (representing 80-140+ points on a 22,000 Nifty) typically provides the minimum extension required for a meaningful snapback opportunity. Smaller deviations offer insufficient reward relative to transaction costs; larger deviations indicate possible genuine directional conviction rather than temporary overextension.
Combine VWAP deviation with: RSI reaching extreme levels (above 72 or below 28 on the 5-minute chart), volume declining on the extension bars (suggesting weakening momentum), and a reversal candle forming at the extension extreme. All three confirming together significantly improves the snapback probability over any single signal.
Check whether the extension is accompanied by sustained, accelerating volume (trend) versus declining volume (snapback setup). Also verify if the direction aligns with pre-market bias and global cues — extensions that align with strong global cues represent genuine directional pressure, while extensions against global direction are more likely overextensions worth fading.
