MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is one of the most reliable and widely used technical indicators. It shows the relationship between two EMAs, helping traders identify trend direction, momentum, and potential reversals all in one indicator.
MACD Components
| Component | Calculation | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| MACD Line | EMA(12) − EMA(26) | Difference between fast and slow EMA |
| Signal Line | EMA(9) of MACD Line | Smoothed average of MACD line |
| Histogram | MACD Line − Signal Line | Momentum — distance between the two lines |
Default MACD Settings (12, 26, 9)
MACD Line = EMA(12) − EMA(26)
Signal Line = EMA(9) of MACD Line
Histogram = MACD Line − Signal Line
Reading MACD
- MACD above zero → EMA 12 is above EMA 26 → bullish momentum
- MACD below zero → EMA 12 is below EMA 26 → bearish momentum
- Histogram growing → momentum is strengthening
- Histogram shrinking → momentum is weakening (potential reversal)
MACD Trading Signals
Signal 1 — MACD / Signal Line Crossover
Bullish: MACD line crosses above the Signal line → Buy signal
Bearish: MACD line crosses below the Signal line → Sell signal
Best on: NIFTY 50 daily chart for positional trades
Bearish: MACD line crosses below the Signal line → Sell signal
Best on: NIFTY 50 daily chart for positional trades
Signal 2 — Zero Line Cross
Bullish: MACD line crosses above zero → Strong uptrend confirmation
Bearish: MACD line crosses below zero → Strong downtrend confirmation
Fewer signals but higher reliability than crossover strategy
Bearish: MACD line crosses below zero → Strong downtrend confirmation
Fewer signals but higher reliability than crossover strategy
Signal 3 — MACD Divergence
Bullish: Price makes lower low, MACD makes higher low → Reversal signal
Bearish: Price makes higher high, MACD makes lower high → Reversal signal
One of the strongest reversal signals in technical analysis
Bearish: Price makes higher high, MACD makes lower high → Reversal signal
One of the strongest reversal signals in technical analysis
MACD Histogram Trading
The histogram visually shows momentum strength. When bars are growing, momentum is increasing. When bars start shrinking, momentum is fading — often the earliest warning of a trend change.
Watch for the MACD histogram to change direction before the actual crossover happens. This gives you an early entry — typically 1-3 candles before the main crossover signal.
Best MACD Settings for NSE
| Settings | Best For | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| 12, 26, 9 (default) | Swing and positional trading | Daily |
| 8, 17, 9 | More sensitive, more signals | Daily / 4H |
| 19, 39, 9 | Smoother, fewer false signals | Weekly |
Limitations
- MACD is a lagging indicator based on historical EMAs
- Generates many false crossover signals in choppy/sideways markets
- Always confirm MACD signals with price action or another indicator
